The Fox News poll surveyed 1,003 registered voters and found broad support for voter ID requirements across the political spectrum. Among self-identified DSA Democrats, 66% favored requiring a valid state or federally issued photo ID to prove U.S. citizenship before registering to vote. This level of support is significant, as DSA-aligned voters are generally considered among the most progressive within the Democratic Party.

Support for proof of citizenship requirements was even higher among other groups. More than 70% of registered Democrats and 67% of self-identified liberals backed the policy. Among Republicans and conservatives, support was nearly unanimous, with 96% in each category expressing approval for the measure.

The poll also indicated strong support for voter ID among younger voters and those with higher education. Specifically, 82% of voters under age 30 and 79% of college graduates supported the requirement to show photo ID to verify citizenship when registering to vote. DSA Leadership’s Opposition

Despite the widespread support among its base, the DSA’s national leadership has consistently opposed the SAVE America Act and similar voter ID laws. Following a Supreme Court decision on state redistricting, the DSA issued a statement criticizing the move, warning that Republican attorneys general in several states—including Texas, Alabama, South Carolina, and Mississippi—would quickly implement what the DSA described as “restrictive voter ID laws and gerrymandering schemes.” The organization argued that such measures would have been blocked under the previous enforcement procedures of the Voting Rights Act.

The Fox News poll also explored attitudes toward requiring photo ID to vote, not just to register. Among DSA Democrats, support for this requirement dropped to 58%. Nevertheless, a majority still favored the measure. Overall, 77% of all respondents supported requiring proof of citizenship to vote, with 62% of Democrats and 95% of Republicans in favor.

The strong support for voter ID among DSA-aligned voters stands in contrast to the national organization’s position. While DSA leaders have not publicly addressed the gap between their stance and the views of their supporters, the poll results suggest that the issue is more nuanced within the progressive base than party leadership statements might indicate.

Republican leaders have seized on the poll’s findings to bolster their case for the SAVE America Act.
