Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) agents have arrested several individuals with violent criminal histories as part of a new operation targeting illegal immigrants in Chicago. The operation, named Operation Midway Blitz, aims to remove individuals who pose a threat to public safety.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated that the arrests included individuals convicted of serious crimes such as sexual assault, drug trafficking, and burglary. McLaughlin emphasized that ICE agents are committed to protecting communities despite facing increased hostility and assaults while performing their duties.

"The media’s vile smears demonizing ICE is leading to our officers facing a 1000% increase in assaults against them as they carry out enforcement operations to make America safe again," (Dhs Sets Record Straight Ice Does Not Raid Schools — dhs.gov) McLaughlin said in a statement.

Among those arrested is Tania Merlo-Mendoza, a 30-year-old from Honduras, who has a history of aggravated battery and was arrested on multiple charges including home invasion and prostitution. Reynaldo Morales-Valenzuela, a 61-year-old from Mexico, was also apprehended; he has a conviction for indecency with a child and was previously sentenced to three years in prison.

Jonathan Venegas-Garcia, a 26-year-old from Mexico, was arrested for assault inflicting serious bodily injury, while Jose Puga-Saldivar and Alejandro Acevedo, both from Mexico, were apprehended for drug-related and burglary offenses, respectively.

Fox News reported that one of the individuals taken into custody was a 43-year-old Mexican national convicted last year of sexually assaulting a child under the age of 13. Additionally, Gabriel J Valle Galvez, a 47-year-old identified as a gang member, was arrested for multiple offenses including battery and aggravated assault. Despite ICE lodging arrest detainers on Valle Galvez, local authorities reportedly released him.

The operation in Chicago is supported by various federal agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Drug Enforcement Administration, and is expected to continue for several weeks. McLaughlin reiterated that ICE is focused on apprehending the most dangerous criminal illegal aliens while countering what she described as false narratives about their operations.

The ongoing efforts by ICE come amid a broader debate over immigration enforcement and public safety, with some local officials and advocacy groups criticizing the agency's tactics and the impact on immigrant communities.
