A Department of Justice employee has been charged with assault after throwing a sandwich at law enforcement officers in Washington, D.C., on August 10. Sean Charles Dunn, who worked as an international affairs specialist, was arrested following the incident, which was captured on video.
Dunn, 31, was charged with felony assault for allegedly yelling obscenities at officers from the Metro Transit Police and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) before throwing the sandwich. The incident occurred as a small group of officers walked on the sidewalk. Dunn reportedly shouted, “Do you see these fascists? … F-ck you, fascists!” while following them across the street.
According to the criminal complaint, Dunn got in the face of one officer and hurled his still-wrapped sandwich at the officer. After realizing the gravity of his actions, Dunn attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended by the officers.
Dunn admitted to the act during processing, stating, “I did it. I threw a sandwich.” Following the incident, he was terminated from his position at the DOJ, where he had been employed since 2022 under the Biden administration.
Attorney General Pam Bondi commented on the situation, stating, “If you touch any law enforcement officer, we will come after you. This is an example of the Deep State we have been up against for seven months as we work to refocus DOJ. You will NOT work in this administration while disrespecting our government and law enforcement.”
The DOJ’s Office of International Affairs, where Dunn was employed, handles sensitive law enforcement matters that impact U.S. foreign relations. Dunn’s actions have drawn attention to the ongoing discussions about law enforcement conduct and public behavior in the nation’s capital.
In recent months, the Trump administration has emphasized a tougher stance on crime in Washington, D.C. President Trump announced a federal takeover of the D.C. police, citing concerns over rising crime rates and public safety. “Our capital city has been overtaken by violent gangs and blood-thirsty criminals,” Trump said, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to addressing crime.
Critics of the administration’s approach argue that such measures may lead to over-policing and infringe on civil liberties. However, supporters maintain that a strong response is necessary to restore order and safety in urban areas.
Dunn is currently represented by attorney Sabrina Shroff, who has previously handled high-profile cases, including those involving national security and terrorism. The outcome of Dunn’s case remains to be seen as it moves through the legal system.
This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between law enforcement and certain segments of the public, as well as the broader implications for government employees and their conduct in public spaces.
