Former President Donald Trump has emphasized the need to end mail-in voting, which he claims is prone to fraud. Currently, 28 states allow mail-in voting without requiring a documented reason.
Earlier this month, Judge James Ho of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit stated, “Mail-in ballots are not secure,” supporting the argument for stricter voting regulations. Many countries have banned mail-in voting due to concerns about its integrity.
Trump criticized the U.S. Postal Service’s declining delivery standards, arguing that it was never intended to conduct elections. He advocates for a return to Election Day-only voting to enhance election integrity.
The Fifth Circuit referenced a report from the bipartisan Commission on Federal Election Reform, which noted that absentee ballots are a significant source of potential voter fraud. Despite this, Trump faces opposition from Democrats, who argue there is no evidence of fraud associated with mail-in voting.
Republicans have attempted to audit mail-in ballots for authenticity, but efforts have been blocked. Trump’s former chief of staff, Mark Meadows, is currently under indictment for questioning the legitimacy of mail-in ballots counted in favor of President Biden during the 2020 election.
Since 2020, 19 states have enacted restrictions on mail-in voting. Trump noted that in the 2024 election, Kamala Harris received 6.3 million fewer votes than Biden did in 2020, while he himself received three million more votes.
Trump announced plans to issue an executive order to eliminate mail-in ballots, stating, “We’re going to start with an executive order that’s being written right now by the best lawyers in the country to end mail-in ballots.”
While some countries allow mail-in voting, they often impose stricter regulations than those in the U.S. For instance, Germany requires ballots to be received by Election Day to be counted, while France has banned mail-in voting altogether due to fraud concerns.
Trump’s opponents argue that the U.S. should not follow the lead of countries that have stricter mail-in voting laws. However, Trump maintains that the current system allows for too much potential for fraud, particularly with the lack of signature verification and extended deadlines for ballot acceptance.
John and Andy Schlafly, sons of conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly, continue to advocate for stricter voting regulations through their organization, the Phyllis Schlafly Eagles.
