Former FBI Director James Comey recently released a five-minute video on Substack, where he used lyrics from Taylor Swift to criticize former President Donald Trump. In the video titled ‘On Taylor Swift,’ Comey expressed his discontent with Trump, particularly regarding Trump’s recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin amid the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict.

Comey stated, ‘Donald Trump is still president and still humiliating America on a national stage, standing next to Vladimir Putin. It’s like a dream, a bad dream you can’t wake up from.’ He did not elaborate on why he views Trump’s diplomatic efforts as negative.

In his remarks, Comey also made sweeping generalizations about the American populace, saying, ‘I don’t want us to become like Trump and his followers. There are far more decent, honest, kind people in America than there are mean jerks.’ He characterized the Republican Party as a minority, despite Trump’s victory in the 2024 election.

Comey’s video included references to Taylor Swift as a source of inspiration. He mentioned attending her concerts and expressed admiration for her music, stating, ‘You see Taylor Swift, and I go way back.’ He described himself as a fan, noting his participation in a family group chat dedicated to her music.

Critics have pointed out the irony in Comey’s comments, especially given his controversial history as FBI director. He faced scrutiny for his handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails and his role in the early stages of the Russia investigation involving Trump.

In the video, Comey also addressed the emotional impact of negativity, suggesting that being less polite can lead to unhappiness. He quoted Swift’s lyrics asking, ‘why you got to be so mean?’ and emphasized the importance of not letting negativity affect one’s mindset.

While Comey’s video aimed to draw parallels between Swift’s music and personal resilience, it has sparked debate over his motivations and the appropriateness of his criticisms of Trump. As he faces renewed scrutiny over his past actions, some speculate that his comments may be an attempt to deflect attention from his own controversies.

Beth Brelje, an elections correspondent for The Federalist, reported on Comey’s video and his use of Swift’s lyrics to frame his critique of Trump. Brelje highlighted the disconnect between Comey’s self-portrayal and the reality of his past decisions as FBI director.
